Lightning runs with Chatanika Samoyeds team

This is the Chatanika Samoyeds sled dog team, owned by Kim & Farrel Katanik. One day the Kataniks plan to run many of these dogs in the Iditarod, a rugged long distance sled dog race which crosses the state of Alaska. In the meantime, they are one of the top mid-distance Samoyed teams in the country, participating in major mid-west races. Training with the team are Lightning* and his sister Wolf River's Moonrise. They are the paired dogs second from the front (Lightning is to Moonrise's right).

These powerful dogs are pulling a 750 pound all terrain vehicle, two people, and lots of water and supplies - all while the ATV is in gear for additional drag! The team is shown returning from an eight mile run in the Rockies. The elevation was close to 9,500 feet at this popular sled dog training area.

Ch. Chatanika's Mudslide, the father of Nimbus (Lightning's little brother who joined us at the SCA 2001 National), is pictured above at wheel position. These are the dogs closest to the ATV.
